Membership Criteria/Position Description for Board of Directors

Purpose

The mission of the STAR Program is to provide behavioral and socialization support to children diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorders such as Autism and Asperger�s Disorder , as well as support to their families. Support is to provide in the form of training groups held on school sites during after-school hours, in-home behavioral consultation, parent training, consultation and training to school staff, and research related to the delivery of socialization training for children with autism.

Basic Responsibilities of the Board of Directors

To provide the leadership and expertise required for: setting policy, organizational oversight in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations, budget compliance and the satisfactory fulfillment of all fiscal and fiduciary obligations.

Term of Office

Board Members shall serve a term of two years and may be eligible to serve multiple terms.

General Criteria for Board Membership

A Board Member:

  • Willingly accepts and promotes the mission, goals and objectives of STAR.
  • Possesses professional expertise necessary to develop and maintain the fiscal soundness and future growth of STAR programs.
  • Can effectively represent the concepts of STAR to the community at large and is willing to provide leadership to that end, including involving others in the work and scope of STAR.
  • Is willing to provide work to add to the financial support of STAR.
  • Is willing to attend quarterly Board meetings and provide leadership on committees.
  • Understands and accepts the fiduciary and legal obligations and responsibilities of Board membership.

Position Description

  • Ensure that STAR meets the needs of the community and constituencies it serves.
  • Assist in development of the vision, strategic plan and organizational objectives for STAR.
  • Provide for safe administration of funds and property of the organization, requiring annual reviews of financial operations.
  • Review and approve organization policy.
  • Review and approve operating and capital budgets of the organization.
  • Establish performance objectives for the Executive Director of STAR, and participate in an annual review.
  • Support fund development activities and related events.
  • Review, nominate and elect new members and officers to the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure that no member of the Board of Directors derives financial or material gain from affiliation with STAR.
